Objectives
The carriageways of the A14 between Trinity Foot and Bar Hill were scanned by StreetMapper on the 23rd March '06 in order to produce a 3D map that can be used by collision investigators after an accident. The digital 3D map will lead to investigators no longer having to survey the road and surrounding environment and enable them to concentrate their efforts on surveying vehicle debris and tyre marks. This will allow Cambridgeshire Police to reduce the time in which the A14 is closed.
Scanning Process
For this project StreetMapper was mounted with 4 laser scanners. To calculate the trajectory TERRAcontrol, consisting of differential GPS and an inertial measurement unit, was used. A rolling road block allowed StreetMapper to capture the road surface free of any vehicles. The video below shows police footage of the event.
