Rapid Mapping

A key feature of the Riegl LMS-Z420i laser scanners is the ability to mount it on a vehicle, using roof bars and a shock-absorbing mount. Combined with an existing GPS system and vehicle, this allows a range of value-added applications – all of which can be undertaken by a single operator.

Key features

The system works by taking a number of scans (along with digital images, if required) at a suitable spacing, and recording the GPS position and orientation at each. The automatic alignment software, GPSalign®, which forms part of this system, utilises the GPS information as a starting point to align the scans together, and then generates surfaces from the scan data to find matching, overlapping geometric features. The final product is a composite, geo-referenced point cloud, ready for post-processing. The system is designed to be simple to operate - it takes four clicks to record the GPS information, import the scan and start the best-fit alignment. This near-real time data alignment allows the operator to examine the quality of the data in the field, and rectify any missed areas. Once the scans are aligned the data can be used in the Riegl software RiScan Pro to calculate volumes and cross sections. Data can also be transferred to TerraScan format.
