Coastal Applications

Laser scanning is being used widely for the capture and monitoring of coastal zones for various applications ranging from erosion and accretion studies to flood zone mapping and forecasting. Our laser scanners have a wide field of view, with high accuracy and the ability to combine high resolution digital colour photography with the scan data, making them ideal for this application.

Typical Applications

  • Erosion/Accretion studies
  • Beach level monitoring
  • Flood Forecasting
  • Detailed flood zone mapping
  • Flood relief channel routing
  • Slope stability and geo-technical studies
  • Survey of inaccessible areas
  • Continuous slope monitoring of high risk areas
  • Coastal Planning
  • Asset/Resource Management
  • 3D visualisation
  • Volumetric calculations for landfill and dredging applications

Suggested Scanners

The Riegl LMS-Z420iand Z390 are typically used for coastal survey work.

Typical Projects

3D Laser Mapping have undertaken a number of surveys for the British Geological Survey where we have visited specific locations of coastal erosion every six months. These locations are typically very isolated and are up to 2km from the nearest road. However, due to the flexibility and portability of the Riegl laser scanners, the scanners were either mounted on a quad bike or in a backpack. Control of laser scan data was made with GPS. Scanners have also been used in the mapping of extensive areas of beach and intertidal zone, many kilometres in length, to provide accurate and detailed baseline information for subsequent coastal monitoring projects or as part of Shoreline Management Plans.

ATM3D, a 3D laser scanning company based in France, undertook a coastal study of the large Northern Dam of the Port of Bayonne using a Riegl LMS-Z420i. A pdf of this study can be found here.
