Slope Stability Monitoring

Developed in partnership with mining surveyors are geo-techs, SiteMonitor excels in providing data on the movement of unstable slopes.

Overview

Laser scanning has always been a tool with great potential in Slope Stability Monitoring, but until SiteMonitor was developed there was no solution available to overcome the problems of repeatability and atmospherics.

Typical Slope Monitoring Applications

  • Open Pit Mines

Periodic stability monitoring of unstable high walls

  • Landslides

Safe and repeatable remote monitoring of dangerous active landslides and other natural slope failures

  • Rock Cuttings

Quick and simple repeat surveys of road-side and railway line cuttings prone to rockfalls

  • Geo-technical Analysis

Automated acquisition of detailed, daily measurements and imagery for geo-technical analysis of rock mass structure and behaviour

Case Study

This data is from a mine in South Africa, and was collected over 6 days.

Day 1: An area of suspected instability is monitored. The first scan is the reference scan, and will be used as the basis for subsequent measurements.

The area below this slope is being actively mined.

Day 4: A repeat survey of the monitoring area is carried out, and comparison of this data to the reference data reveals movement of some of the material on the slope.

Mining machinery is moved away and the area below the slope is cordoned off.

Day 6: By the end of the week, significant movement has occurred. Blue indicates movement away from the scanner; red indicates movement towards the scanner.

The high resolution of the data lends itself to detailed analysis and interpretation of the movement - no other monitoring system (prisms, radar) provides this level of detail.
