LiDAR Overview

Laser scanning or LiDAR is a relatively new land surveying technique, which is based on high precision laser scanners, the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs). Combined, they allow the positioning and orientation of the footprint of a laser beam as it hits an object, to a high degree of accuracy.

Laser Scanners

For information on laser scanners please click here.

GPS

GPS is used in LiDAR system to determine the systems position. For information on GPS please click here.

IMU

The IMU calculates the roll, pitch and yaw of the LiDAR system. For information on IMU's please click here.

INS

An INS (Inertial Navigation System) is composed of a GPS and an IMU, and provides the position, velocities and attitude of the LiDAR system.
